Before you set off
British citizens visiting Portugal should check current passport and entry rules on the UK government’s Portugal travel-advice pages. At the time this guide was reviewed, Portugal followed Schengen rules and visa-free tourist visits were generally limited to 90 days in any 180-day period. Treat this as a prompt to check—not a substitute for official advice.
Day one: Baixa, Alfama and the viewpoints
Start in the flatter streets of Baixa, then work gradually towards Alfama. The historic lanes are best explored without a strict minute-by-minute schedule: choose one viewpoint, allow time for steep streets and stop when a small square or café catches your attention.
Alfama is one of Lisbon’s characteristic historic neighbourhoods and is closely associated with traditional fado houses. If you plan an evening performance, confirm the venue’s format and whether dinner is required before reserving.
Day two: Belém and the river
Use the morning for Belém and its concentration of cultural sites. Pick one or two major attractions instead of rushing through everything. Capacity can be limited at popular monuments, so check official opening information and reservation requirements before travelling across the city.
Return towards the centre along the river and leave the evening open. A flexible second day gives you somewhere to move an activity if weather or queues disrupt the first plan.
Day three: stay local or choose Sintra
If this is your first short visit, another Lisbon day can be more rewarding than squeezing in a rushed excursion. Explore a market, museum or neighbourhood you missed. If palaces and landscaped hills are your priority, plan Sintra as a full day and check transport and timed-entry arrangements in advance.
Getting around
Lisbon Metro states that its normal network hours are 6:30am to 1:00am daily, but individual service conditions can change. The official Lisboa Card combines public transport with entry or discounts at participating attractions; compare the current inclusions against what you genuinely plan to visit before buying.
