One week before travel

  • Check passport validity, entry requirements and the destination’s current government travel advice.
  • Confirm travel insurance covers the planned destination and activities.
  • Check whether your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM if you intend to use one.
  • Review your mobile network’s roaming charges before deciding whether you need another data option.

Choosing mobile data

Compare the total data allowance, validity period, supported countries, activation instructions and whether calls or text messages are included. Many travel eSIM products are data-only. Do not remove your main SIM profile unless you understand how to restore it, and keep access to the number used for bank or security codes.

Install the provider’s app or eSIM profile while you still have reliable Wi-Fi, but follow its instructions about when to activate the plan. Take screenshots of the setup steps and customer-support details.

Create an offline backup

  • Download the local area in your preferred map app.
  • Save boarding passes, accommodation details and transfer instructions as files or screenshots.
  • Write down the accommodation address and an emergency contact.
  • Keep copies of essential documents securely, separate from the originals.
  • Carry a charging cable and a compliant power bank where permitted.

When luggage storage helps

Short-term storage can make an early arrival or late departure easier, especially when accommodation will not hold bags. Check the location’s opening hours, accepted bag sizes, identification requirements, insurance or guarantee conditions and the latest collection time. Never leave passports, medication, cash or irreplaceable valuables in stored luggage.

First-hour rule: make sure the accommodation address, transfer instructions and one offline map are accessible before you leave the airport Wi-Fi.

Final departure check

Open every important booking once, test the offline files and make sure the name on each reservation matches the traveller. The UK government’s foreign travel checklist is a useful final independent review for British travellers.
